1. McManus: 'Tea party' tempest brewing

The "tea party" is back and is brewing trouble for the Republican establishment.
The "tea party" is back and is brewing trouble for the Republican establishment. After the GOP debacle in the 2012 election, when Republicans not only failed to win the presidency but blew a chance to take over the Senate, party leaders paused to...

3. Congress expands inquiry into IRS handling of conservative groups

WASHINGTON — Congressional investigators are broadening their inquiry into the Internal Revenue Service's mishandling of groups seeking tax-exempt status, indicating that they plan to examine how the agency dealt with a wide swath of nonprofit applications during the last three years.

5. Commencement speakers: Conservatives need not apply

We have once again entered the college commencement season, which means we'll soon be reading about uplifting graduation speeches delivered by prominent Americans. Or at least by prominent liberal Americans.

9. By firing IRS boss, Obama buys into GOP's rush to judgment

On Wednesday, President Obama fired the head of the Internal Revenue Service, the first sacrificial lamb brought down after the alleged “targeting” of conservative political groups by the IRS. Obama declared, “Americans are right to be angry about it.” Call me out of step, but I am angrier that the president is joining the rush to judgment.

It's strange how "scandal" gets defined these days in Washington. At the moment, everyone is screaming about the "scandal" of the Internal Revenue Service scrutinizing conservative nonprofits before granting them tax-exempt status. Here are the...

13. The real scandal: IRS gives tax exemptions to political partisans

The revelation that conservative political groups seeking tax-exempt status were singled out for special attention by Internal Revenue Service bureaucrats has given Republicans their best cudgel yet to beat on the Obama administration. But as the outrage revs into high gear, let me offer a contrarian perspective: As inept as the IRS may have been in the way they processed applications for 501(c)(4) status, the bigger scandal is that the IRS grants the tax-exempt designation to so many overtly political organizations, treating them as if they are no more engaged in partisan politics than the Girl Scouts.

15. Paul Feig puts 'The Heat' on funny women

Not long after Paul Feig created the beloved cult TV series "Freaks and Geeks" in 1999, studios began barraging him with coming-of-age sex comedy scripts, even though "Freaks," with its sweet, sympathetic portrait of the perils of adolescence, was spiritually opposed to that kind of lunkheaded, frat-boy humor.

17. Massachusetts voters head to the polls for Senate primary

SOMERVILLE, Mass. – Stephen Lynch was in a hurry on Friday morning, first to a pair of diners along Broadway, then down the street to a firehouse. By day’s end, he’d hit 18 stops in six cities and towns in the Boston area, as he worked to do “14 days worth of work in four days,” as a volunteer put it.

23. GOP study calls for changes to halt presidential losing streak

WASHINGTON -- A smug, uncaring, ideologically rigid national Republican Party is turning off the majority of American voters, with stale policies that have changed little in 30 years and an image that alienates minorities and the young, according to an internal GOP study.
