1. Poll: Raising the eligibility age for Medicare

Medicare may not be the third rail of American politics -- that distinction belongs to Social Security -- but politicians who alter it put their careers at risk. For proof, just look at how Republicans lost a congressional seat in a conservative upstate New York district in early 2011 after the Democratic underdog made an issue of the Medicare overhaul proposed by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.). One might also blame the Medicare provisions in the 2010 healthcare law -- particularly the reductions to Medicare Advantage subsidies -- for helping the GOP take over the House in that year's elections, although that was just one of many problems for Democrats back then.

  3. When government does things better than private enterprise

Budget discussions in Washington these days always seem to deteriorate into arguments over what government is supposed to do for its citizens, and what should be left aside. Is the reach of government strictly defined in the Constitution? Or tradition? And, if so, whose "tradition"?

  19. Kinsley: The more things change ...

Bill Clinton became president on a platform of "change." Not change in any particular way — just change in the abstract. Like characters in a Chekhov play, Americans found daily life unbearable in some usually unspecified way, and dreamed of escape. But they didn't have the energy to achieve escape velocity. Then along came this fast-talking charmer, and suddenly we left Chekhov behind and were in "The Music Man."

  23. Can the bozos who created the 'fiscal cliff' save us from it?

On Monday, investors on Wall Street sent stocks soaring on the airy hope that the president and Congress will come up with a deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff" that looms at the close of the year. This only proves that the masters of finance have all the emotional sophistication of 13-year-old Justin Bieber fans.
