  1. Todd Akin has plenty of company in Republicans' unhinged faction

Missouri congressman Todd Akin’s outrageously weird assertion that a woman cannot get pregnant from “forcible rape" exposes three predicaments facing the Republican Party.

  3. Todd Akin's remarks on rape may help clarify the abortion debate

Like any sentient person, I was appalled by Missouri Republican Congressman Todd Akin's comments about "legitimate rape." I was shocked by the Limbaugh-ian proportions of his ignorance about the female reproductive system ("in cases of legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down") and remain flabbergasted that he hasn't caved in to party pressure to quit his Senate campaign.

  7. We've made progress, only to see it undone

What we have here is a failure to communicate. Or at least, that's Rick Ross' story and he's sticking to it.

  13. Republicans rediscover tolerance

WASHINGTON -- As lawmakers put the finishing touches on an immigration deal, veteran Rep. Don Young decided this would be a good time to come out with an immigration plan of his own. His involves calling Latino immigrants "wetbacks."

  15. How low can FAU go? A satirical look ahead

The stomp on Jesus controversy. The Owlcatraz stadium/GEO Group sponsorship controversy. The Sandy Hook massacre-doubting-professor controversy. Think things can't get any worse at Florida Atlantic University? Here's how: An exclusive sneak peek at President Mary Jane Saunders' (imaginary) calendar for, yes, April 1.

  17. Lugar still speaking his own mind

Politicians on the Far Right, seeking to turn the Republican Party into an uncompromising, unquestioning cause in their own image, sought to silence Dick Lugar's voice of moderation, promising that Indiana still would send a Republican to the Senate.

After Mitt Romney's 2012 election shellacking, a predictable blame-storm erupted between Republican pragmatists who want to win elections and the conservative zealots who love to argue.

  21. Can the GOP escape its bubble?

Here we go again. Whenever I try to offer a little helpful advice to Republican leaders, I hear from cranky conservatives who blow me off, saying they're "not about to take advice from a liberal like you" — or words to that effect.
