William Sloane Coffin

William Sloane Coffin Jr. was a Christian clergyman ordained by the Presbyterian church, who received ministerial standing in the United Church of Christ. Coffin was born in New York City on June 1, 1924. He attended Yale University for music until Coffin left college to enlist in the Army. After fighting in World War II, Coffin returned to Yale, and finished his studies. Coffin briefly joined the CIA, only to return to Yale, attending the Yale Divinity School. Coffin is most known for being a peace activist, something that got him jailed a few time while protesting against the Vietnam War and for civil rights. Coffin is most known for being a peace activist, something that got him jailed a few time while protesting against the Vietnam War and for civil rights. Later in his life, Coffin served as Senior Minister at the Riverside Church in New York City and as President of SANE/Freeze. Coffin remained vocal about his liberal views up until his death, advocating against the Iraq War and for gay rights. Coffin died April 12, 2006.  « Show less
