The Swamp
by Mark Silva This isn't Crawford, Texas, anymore. This is Martha's Vineyard, the remote island retreat of clapboard cottages, bluff-views of the ocean and tranquil harbors reachable by ferry, boat or plane off the shore of Cape Cod where the......

5. New York, historically behind the curve

Spin Cycle
For all its pretense to life on the cutting edge, New York finds itself playing catch-up when it comes to certain political trends. The rise of Barack Obama is the latest example. One day before last February???s presidential primary,......

7. The law is on Blagojevich's side

Like it or not, Illinois Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich has the legal authority to appoint Roland Burris to the U.S. Senate, and Burris, the state's former attorney general, should be allowed to take the seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama. Senate Democrats are on weak constitutional ground in trying to deny a seat to a properly selected individual. Their claim to the power to exclude a lawfully chosen senator could create a dangerous precedent.

9. Blagojevich's Senate ploy

Given his shameless refusal to step down, it's not surprising that Illinois Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich insisted on exercising his authority to appoint a U.S. senator to succeed President-elect Barack Obama. The governor, who has been accused by federal prosecutors of planning to auction off the seat, further cheapened the selection of former state Atty. Gen. Roland Burris by allowing a member of Congress to play the race card at Tuesday's news conference.

15. Al Sharpton: Reinventing himself

Chicago Tribune senior correspondent
As political theater goes -- political theater of the absurd, that is -- you could not make this up. Sharing a Manhattan stage are Buddhism's most venerated holy man, the Dalai Lama, and presidential candidate Rev. Al Sharpton, the noisy civil rights...

LANCASTER, S.C. — On a sweltering afternoon, the Rev. Al Sharpton takes a swig of iced tea and rises to address the crowd at Etta's Kitchen. Hooking his thumbs in the vest of a three-piece suit, the Harlem Democrat explains why he's running for...

19. A Second Renaissance in Harlem

Special To The Times
Noisy, diesel-belching tour buses routinely roll uptown headed for the heart of Harlem. Some residents call them "drive-bys." "The bus comes by. Cameras go off. Then they're gone," said Anthony Bowman, co-owner of the Harlem Gift Shop. "There's no...

It's hard to say exactly where Ishmael Reed will lose the typical reader in the course of his most recent novel, which is political tract as much as fiction. Some readers will tune out when the author writes, while discussing the Anita Hill-Clarence...
