  3. The fast-moving tale of a rescue dog named Ginger

When I had dogs as a kid, and later as a young adult, there didn't seem to be anything difficult about finding the right canine or taking care of it. But things seem to have gotten a lot more complicated since then.

  5. Mark Binelli on Detroit, Los Angeles, and our urban future

Mark Binelli is a novelist, Rolling Stone journalist and native Michigander. Born and raised near Detroit, he returned to the city to write "<a href="http://www.markbinelli.com/">Detroit City is the Place To Be: The Afterlife of An American Metropolis</a>." The book explores the many desolate blocks and surprising points of inspiration and revival in a city that is the most extreme example of America's lost industrial heritage. He'll be coming to the L.A. Times <a href="http://events.latimes.com/festivalofbooks/">Festival of Books</a> taking place at USC on April 20-21. Binelli answered our questions by email.

  7. The can't-miss first date

I pride myself on my instincts. I can tell my roommate is avoiding her chores by her walk. My predictions of early television cancellations are always on the money. My personal mantra is "I know," and when I'm sure, I'm sure.

  13. Make it stop: Jane Austen via 'Downton Abbey' in new book

Jane Austen has been dead for close to 200 years, but it's hard to imagine she's gotten much rest in her grave in Westminster Abbey, what with all the rewrites, updates and zombifications of her work. We get it: her books are much beloved, and readers enjoy encountering them again and again, and anew.

  15. Live video chat with Will Self on 'Umbrella' and more, Tue. Jan 15

Novelist, journalist, sometime bad boy and frequent literary provocateur Will Self is hard to miss in England. He's 6-feet-5, for starters; what's more, he's terrifically prolific, publishing literary works of fiction and nonfiction almost every year. His latest is "Umbrella," a 397-page novel story told in a single stream-of-consciousness paragraph.

  21. 'Going Clear' takes on Scientology's celebrity fixation

Who'd have thought a history of a religion would offer so many guilty pleasures? Lawrence Wright's enthralling account of Scientology's rise, "Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief," brims with celebrity scandal. To anyone who gets a sugar rush from Hollywood gossip, the chapters on Tom Cruise and John Travolta will feel like eating a case of Ding Dongs.

  23. Quiz: Are you fashion backward?

In what should probably not be considered guides to modern living, the British Library has re-released a pair of charming Victorian-era books about beauty and fashion. "<a href="http://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/distributed/B/bo14390487.html" target="_self">Beauty, What It Is and How to Retain It</a>" by A Lady was first published in 1873; "<a href="http://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/distributed/G/bo14390314.html" target="_self">The Gentleman's Art of Dressing With Economy</a>" by A Lounger at the Clubs followed in 1876. While the tone A Lady takes is rather sharp, The Lounger is trying to dispense real advice without taking himself too seriously -- think Tim Gunn in a top hat. Take our quiz, which uses these two books as sources, to find out just how well you know your Victorian fashion and beauty rules. How fashion backward are you?
