  1. Quakers protest PNC Bank in Somerset

About 10 members of the Earth Quaker Action Team protested in front of the PNC Bank in Somerset Wednesday. The group, defending the Quaker religion and its values, is conducting a 200-mile, 16-day walk from Philadelphia to PNC national headquarters in Pittsburgh. Protesters claim that PNC Bank provides the largest financing for coal mining companies that surface mine the summit or summit ridge of mountains. In addition, the group is critical of PNC because of its Quaker roots. Pittsburgh National merged with Provident National — which was founded by Quakers — in 1983. The Earth Quaker Action Team's "Green Your Money" initiative urges PNC customers to close their accounts in protest of the mining because they claim it hurts the environment as well as human health due to affected streams, and exposure to airborne toxins and dust. PNC Bank officials declined to comment on the protest. For more information on the group, visit www.greenpnc.org.

With performers like Margaux Hayes, Richard McGhee III, Abu Carter, David Brown, Kevin Lamkins and Jill Friedman, it's easy to imagine heading to the Bright Star Vision fundraiser, which supports educational projects in the Volta Region of Ghana, just for the music. But you can also chat with former spoken-word artists Mira (also known as Dream Chaser), participate in a drum circle led by Playtivity's Craig Norton and Virginia Anderson (pictured) while your kids steep themselves in various activities, purchase some sweet direct-trade Ghanaian items. (Oh, and your donation's tax deductible.)
