  1. Faith in Crystal Cathedral is returning — and so is its flock

Lately, attending the Crystal Cathedral has been like going to a reunion.
Lately, attending the Crystal Cathedral has been like going to a reunion. Longtime members have returned, along with a 60-person robed choir. Traditional hymns fill the church. And on Sunday, a recognizable face unexpectedly took the pulpit for the first...

  11. Now, about gay marriage

Pastor Rick Warren, the famous <em style=&quot;b"></em>leader of Lake Forest's Saddleback Church, became a lightning rod in the same-sex marriage controversy when he was chosen to deliver the invocation at Barack Obama's inauguration. Yet he didn't give his opponents anything to shout about Tuesday, offering a prayer that was short, inspirational and above all uncontroversial. That points up an uncomfortable truth for proponents of gay rights: Warren may not be as big a problem as the president he blessed.

  13. Rick Warren is an insulting choice

To understand how angry and disappointed many Democrats are that Barack Obama has invited evangelical preacher Rick Warren to give the invocation at his inaugural, imagine if a President-elect John McCain had offered this unique honor to the Rev. Al Sharpton -- or the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. I know, it's hard to picture: John McCain would never do that in a million years. Republicans respect their base even when, as in McCain's case, it doesn't really return the favor.

  15. A prayer for Rick Warren

Many have weighed in on Barack Obama's choice of Rick Warren to give the invocation during the presidential inauguration. But what has interested me most isn't so much the controversy about the Lake Forest pastor and his homophobic thinking, but rather the pride I feel in his ascendancy to such a prominent stage. To have a local boy help out our president-elect tells me that Orange County Christianity has made it, and it's about time.

  17. A Certain Grace

If I'm going to write about Ben and Ione's wedding in India—which was, let me just say from the start, intensely profound and beautiful—there's no way around it: I have to write about Amma. Amma was the whole reason we were there, after all.
