7. An affront Catholics agree on

Ever since the closing of the Second Vatican Council in 1965, conservative and liberal Roman Catholics have been deeply divided over church teachings, many of them concerning marriage and sexual matters. Those who are more conservative would like to see the teachings remain in place, while liberals would like to see drastic changes. Now, suddenly, after decades of internecine bickering, liberals and conservatives among Catholics have joined forces on an issue. Strangely enough, it involves artificial birth control, one of the sorest points between the two factions.

  11. Archbishop Pietro Sambi dies at 73; Vatican's ambassador to the U.S.

As papal nuncio to the United States, Archbishop Pietro Sambi had the formidable job of representing the Vatican at a time of challenge and scandal in the Roman Catholic Church, as well as escorting Pope Benedict XVI on his 2008 American visit. By almost all accounts, he carried out these missions with diplomatic aplomb and Italian charm.

  13. Tim Rutten: The road to marriage equality runs through New York

The current debate over marriage equality in the New York Legislature is a matter of importance to all, because at its heart it's about finally extending basic rights to those to whom they have been denied.

  17. 'CBS This Morning' the thinking person's way to start the TV day

I have been meaning to write a big piece about CBS News and "This Morning" for two weeks. But other assignments took precedence, so now I'll have to write a much smaller piece a day late after the network has already celebrated 100 days of its revamped and journalistically-amped 'Early Show' with Charlie Rose and Gayle King.

  21. Cardinal Dolan Sues 3 Obama Cabinet Members

The Archdiocese of New York, joined by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, filed a federal lawsuit Monday against three Cabinet officials in the Obama administration.
It was the first, legal salvo in the feud over insurance funding for birth control--which could soon be a mandate, even for Catholic health care agencies and universities. "I appreciated meeting the President; there's a lot I admire about him," Timothy Cardinal Dolan told PIX 11, after the suit was filed in the Eastern District of New York. "But we weren't making progress."
