  1. Republican lawmakers show their division on immigration reform

WASHINGTON — The divide within the Republican Party over immigration reform was on full view Monday, as top party leaders made a case for overhauling the laws even as conservative senators argued that the Boston bombings showed the need to go slow.

  3. A softening in the Catholic line on gays?

An old friend,  a graduate of a Jesuit high school, called my attention to this story about the decision by McQuaid Jesuit High School in Brighton, N.Y. , to allow two gay  students to attend the  school’s  Junior Ball as a couple. My  friend commented: "Of  course it's a Jesuit school. Humaneness is in the S.J. DNA.”

  5. Gay marriage across the pond

In voting to legalize same-sex marriage, Britain's House of Commons has proved that a tradition-conscious society can also adapt to social change. Enactment of the legislation, which is also expected to pass the House of Lords after some additional action in the Commons, would put to shame politicians here in Britain's most powerful former colony who continue to resist the legalization of civil marriage for gay and lesbian couples. But it also demonstrates that support for marriage equality is compatible with conservative views on other issues, a reality Republicans in the United States should ponder.

  7. Catholic bishops won't take 'mostly yes' for an answer

In journalism, a “standing hed” is a headline that can be used over and over because the event it describes is recurring. My favorite standing hed is “Pope Prays for Peace,” but the New York Times this week had one that is becoming equally familiar: “Bishops Reject Birth Control Compromise.”
