3. Images of the Homeless at New London's Gallery at Firehouse Square

Homelessness is one of those situations that we don't really fully understand until it happens to us or someone we know. The new exhibit at the Gallery at Firehouse Square aims to bring awareness to the issue and help the homeless in the New London area. Right Next Door: Images of the Homeless and Those Who Help Them is a display of Alex Matthiessen's photos and Elisabeth McGinn's oil paintings of homeless people they've documented over the years. The two women met as volunteers at a soup kitchen, and in the giving spirit, the gallery is also collection donations of canned food, clothing, hygiene and feminine products, underwear and socks. In addition to the physical donations, the entirety of the proceeds from the works – all of which are for sale – will go to the Homeless Hospitality Center of New London and St. Vincent de Paul Place in Norwich. While the exhibit itself opened for view on March 10, the opening reception happens this Saturday, March 16, from 2-6 p.m., where you can meet the artists, view a video documentary produced by students at East Lyme High School, and participate in a silent auction.
