1. Nurse manages her pain and young cancer patients one song at a time

Barbara Britt has a song in her head, a campfire tune that she learned years ago.
Barbara Britt has a song in her head, a campfire tune that she learned years ago. I'm a little piece of tin. Its silliness, she knew, would keep her upbeat for the appointment she had with James Lee, the 12-year-old with a tumor in his brain stem....

7. Some fertility treatments linked to higher risk of birth defects

For couples seeking to overcome infertility by turning to assisted reproductive technology – which can be invasive and expensive – an increased risk of birth defects probably won’t stand in their way. Still, a study released Saturday by the <a href="http://www.nejm.org/">New England Journal of Medicine may give some prospective parents a little something to think about as they mull their options for fertility treatment.

11. Patt Morrison Asks: Carl Guardino, Silicon Valley's big wheel

The last time I saw Carl Guardino, the head of the <a href="http://svlg.org/%20">Silicon Valley Leadership Group, he was in a wheelchair after a biking accident encounter with some skateboarders. The wheelchair is probably the only form of transportation Guardino doesn't like. He was appointed to the state transportation commission by a Republican governor and reappointed by a Democratic one. That pretty much sums up the way SVLG works: It's about policy, not politics, and the issues are broad: from math education to affordable housing to opening a patent office in Santa Clara County. He commutes 32 miles a day by bike — good training for the marathon work of making life more livable for everyone, from waiters to millionaires, in what was once called "the Valley of Heart's Delight."

13. New Avastin tests add to confusion over use in breast cancer

In November, following an emotional public hearing some months earlier, the Food and Drug Administration withdrew approval for the cancer drug Avastin for patients with metastatic breast cancer — the late-stage, incurable form of the disease. The reason: emerging evidence that the drug does not prolong life and also that it's been linked to serious side effects.

17. Movie review: '50/50'

As its title unintentionally indicates, "50/50" walks a very tricky line. As a comedy about a young man with cancer, it needs to be serious enough to be real as well as light enough to be funny. Though it falls off the wagon at times, it maintains its balance remarkably well.
