  17. Steeped in history, Old Town beckons home buyers with many fresh qualities

There's a vintage house in Old Town with a fascinating link to the Chicago Fire. It went up just after that 1871 blaze, and like numerous other Old Town homes was built from a kit of construction materials and lumber. Some of the lumber was burned wood reclaimed from the great fire's ashes. It's said even today, when the winds are just right, it's possible to detect the scent of charred timber within that old dwelling.

  19. Daley's last rounds

As his days as mayor dwindle down to a precious few, Richard M. Daley continues to make the rounds. Just as his father before him, so has the younger Daley ever kept a busy schedule of dedications, parties, funerals, wakes, unveilings, opening nights, ribbon cuttings … the nuts-and-bolts of being mayor.

  21. New ride services offer transportation options for seniors

Transportation is a big issue for older people. Take Carole Howard for example. She lives in the city's North Side Lincoln Park neighborhood and hasn't owned a car in a long time because she suffers from fibroneuralgia and can't drive. She uses a walker and relies mostly on public transportation to get around. But the number of buses on her route have been cut and the buses are crowded. So it's hard for Howard to get on the bus with her walker. She was even injured not long ago while sitting on the bus when it took a curve too fast and she got hit in the knee by another rider's wheelchair.

  23. Walkable communities are a step ahead

Ask any senior, and they'll tell you retirement is no time to put your feet up. Experts have been telling us for years that walking is the best route to physical, emotional and social health. (Your feet should be meeting pavement at least 30 minutes a day for moderate activity, according to the Surgeon General.) The Centers for Disease Control says a shift from auto trips to walking and biking is the No. 1 strategy to reduce diseases related to inactivity, such as heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer. There is even new evidence that seniors can preserve the size of their brain and their memory into old age by walking regularly at least six miles per week, says the National Institute on Aging.
