RAPID CITY, S.D. - U.S. Rep. Kristi Noem took up the issue of federal spending during a town hall meeting in Rapid City Friday afternoon. Noem says with all the talk of the Fiscal Cliff throughout the past few months, many constituents have called her with questions regarding our country's financial issues.

The second term representative says the big issue is the federal government spends too much. She compared the government's spending habits to those of a person making about $46,000 a year.

Noem says, "If you lived like the government and you spent money, you would spend $72,000 a year, even though you were only making $46,000. It means every year you'd be accumulating $26,000 worth of debt on credit cards, on short-term loans, on whatever you had to do just to float your monthly budget."

Noem says right now Washington is dysfunctional and oftentimes lawmakers can't come to terms with one another. But she says she feels this represents the culture of the United States, and in order for a solution to come out of these problems, the country and its citizens must become more united.
