5. Vancouver's secondhand stores: a real treasure trove

During a lull on a train from Amsterdam to Paris, it hit me. A group of Canadian backpackers was chatting with the Belgian conductor, and inevitably the subject of Canada's southern neighbor arose.

As a woman, I know I'm supposed to swoon at the sight of chocolate and lower my voice when I rhapsodize about chocolate truffles, souffles and bouchons, as if I were talking about an illicit love affair.

  11. Wine wisdom in Los Angeles

    S. Irene Virbila restaurant critic>>> For those of us who love wine, Los Angeles is a wonderful city for all things vinous. We have some of the best wine shops in the country, so competitive with one another that the selection of wines and favorable pricing trump those of most retailers in other parts of the country. ¶ Not only that: L.A. boasts a good number of wine-friendly restaurants where you can nourish a deepening interest in the grape. Not to mention the restaurateurs and wine waiters who offer engaging advice on wine with undisguised passion for pet appellations or finds. ¶ For true wine lovers, it's not about which restaurant has the deepest cellar or the deepest pockets. It's about which has the most beguiling wine list. And it's not even just about the wine, it's also very much about a wine culture where the sommeliers and servers celebrate wine and, without intimidating anybody, however green, make the subject fun to explore. ¶ It's easy to propose that $300 bottle of cult Cabernet or name Burgundy, or the wines that have just topped the charts in the Wine Advocate or Wine Spectator. But coming up with a little-known wine or up-and-coming young producer -- that takes research and ingenuity. It means tasting and tasting to find the good bottles, not just reading up online.

  13. Larchmont Boulevard blends old and new

Just south of Hollywood's soundstages and editing houses sits L.A.'s answer to Main Street, U.S.A: Larchmont Boulevard, which is peppered with stylish boutiques and inviting restaurants that cater to hip moms, foodies and families. The mix of new and old is refreshing -- yes, there's a Pinkberry, but Larchmont Barber Shop and Larchmont Hardware have been on the street since the 1920s and '30s, respectively -- and it draws regular crowds, who find the very strollable street a refreshing destination for one-stop shopping.

  21. This season, Santa's shopping locally

A songwriter friend of mine once observed that some people can walk around the block and see the whole world while others can go around the world and not see a thing. Food can work the same way. With the current availability of almost anything from almost anywhere, thanks to the Internet, it's sometimes easy to lose sight of the great products we have right here in Southern California.

  23. Can Brentwood Country Mart re-create its success?

With its picnic tables, overfed pigeons and fast-food stands, the kitschy barn-themed shopping center looks like a throwback from an era before air-conditioned malls took over the retail world. There are no department stores and no glittering retail names like Tiffany or Chanel.
