Gustave Tassell, a California designer who became a fashion star in the early 1960s with starkly refined clothes that appealed to women like Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Greer Garson and Princess Grace of Monaco, has died. He was 88. A contemporary of James Galanos and Bill Blass, Tassell died Monday in Los Angeles of complications from Alzheimer's disease, said his sister, Rebecca Welles Weis. He was a longtime resident of West Hollywood. "Gustave had great taste, first class all the way down the line," Galanos said in an interview last week.
