1. Rash guards that do double duty as streetwear

Action sports and high fashion may not seem like the most likely of companions, but in the past decade designers have done more than dip a toe into surf culture; they have embraced the easygoing, sun-drenched lifestyle common to Southern California and found plenty of inspiration.

  3. PETA wishes Beyonce had not worn leather at the Super Bowl

At Sunday's Super Bowl, Beyonce wore costumes that incorporated leather and exotic iguana and snakeskin. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wishes she hadn't. And that she hadn't worn a fur coat to President Obama's inauguration in January, either. "We would take a bet that if Beyoncé watched our video exposés, she'd probably not want to be seen again in anything made of snakes, lizards, rabbits or other animals who died painfully," The organization reportedly said in a statement. "Today's fashions are trending toward humane vegan options, and Beyoncé's Super Bowl outfit missed the mark on that score." [The Cut]

  5. David Beckham races through Beverly Hills in his underwear

H&M released some stills from filmmaker Guy Ritchie's new ad campaign for David Beckham Bodywear. The tongue-in-cheek ads cast Beckham as an action hero, being chased through Beverly Hills, wearing briefs and, strangely, bedroom slippers. “David is the perfect leading man,” Ritchie said in materials sent around to the media on Thursday. “For me, this felt like more than a campaign – it was like directing a short film.” The ad campaign begins Feb. 6.

  9. Majoring in chic at L.A.'s fashion schools

In a bustling part of downtown L.A., a high-rise is teeming with stylish young women in short skirts and full makeup wheeling small suitcases in and out of elevators on their way to class. They're students at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, where, down the hall from a flat-screen TV broadcasting a runway show, past a plexiglass case of high-fashion Barbies, two of their peers are consulting with Mary Stephens, the school's self-described "big boss."¶"This is a very new-looking shape here," says Stephens, FIDM's director of fashion design. She is talking to Alejandro Ortega, one of 11 students the school has accepted into its advanced fashion design program this year and one of the 8,000 students enrolled on FIDM's four California campuses.

  11. Young L.A. designers to watch

L.A. fashion week took center stage this month, with several familiar and some not-so-familiar labels showing collections to buyers and the media. But off the runway, there's a fairly new crop of promising contemporary brands that didn't participate in fashion week events but are worth knowing about because of the way they capture the L.A. lifestyle through their easy, wearable and versatile pieces for women.

  19. Fashion apps that are real finds

As the saying goes, there's an app for that — more than 300,000 in Apple's app store, to be exact. And since the iPhone became available for Verizon customers, even more members of the stylish set can get a digital fashion fix via personal mobile devices. But not all shopping and fashion apps are created equal — as evidenced by the bevy of them that are little more than a cellphone version of a designer's look book.
