    This week at Jewel-Osco -- and at all Chicago area grocery stores -- the theme is junk food for the Super Bowl. All manner of sausages, buns, pop and beer, chili ingredients, that kinda stuff is all on sale. My favorite deals this week are a) The RedEnvelope/Haagen-Dazs deal, and b) a hot deal on Ronzoni Garden Delight pasta that is not actually advertised in the ad.

  2. Feeding a family of 5 on $100 a week: Organic chickens!

    The major excitement of my shopping week -- let's be honest, of my week <em>in general</em> -- came on Friday when Whole Foods sold organic, free range chickens* for $1.69 per pound. I dug into the "bulk meat savings fund" and bought 10 chickens for $93. That doesn't come out of my $100 this week, but it means my bulk meat fund is down to $248.50. Since my mother said it's about time for us to order our half pig, I guess I'll put off my <a href="http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-02-07/features/sc-food-0204-frugalista-bulk-meats-20110204_1_hormone-free-ground-beef-meat" target="_blank">bulk beef purchase</a> until fall, when more farmers seem to be slaughtering&nbsp;cattle anyway.
