  5. Market Watch: Coachella desert's Valencia Pride and Keitt mangoes have arrived

Customers have been wondering for weeks when they'd show up, and now Wong Farms' desert mangoes, among the most exotic and eagerly sought fruits grown in California, are back at the Wednesday Santa Monica farmers market. 9. Chefs who make house calls

On the counter in Jill Donenfeld's Malibu kitchen, just across Pacific Coast Highway from David Geffen's sprawling compound: leafy cilantro; wild arugula; portobello, shiitake and cremini mushrooms; a deep purple eggplant; silken organic tofu; gourmet olive oil; sea salt and a food processor. Donenfeld certainly knows her way around the kitchen — she's been a recipe tester, a sous-chef for a catering company and a cookbook author — but on this sunny afternoon she's not doing the cooking. Her "culinista" is.

  13. Beer of the Month: Moylan's Brewing Kilt Lifter

It's October, the weather's cooling off and the classic idea is a German Oktoberfest-type beer. But there's a world of other malty beers out there.

  21. Market Watch: Australian finger limes make a splash in Santa Monica

One of the rarest and most sought-after fruits, the Australian finger lime, has started showing up in significant quantities at the Santa Monica farmers market, creating a minor sensation. The fruit's appearance is enough to excite wonder: from the outside it looks like a little gherkin, but when sliced in half, the round, pearlescent juice vesicles ooze out of the fruit, like citrus caviar. The clean, fresh, tart lime-lemon taste is enticing enough, but the texture, crunchy and juicy, like citrus Pop Rocks, is even more prepossessing.
