  1. A naked grab for money?

PALM SPRINGS — For Elizabeth Young, Desert Shadows was a place where she could shed her blouse, pantyhose, sensible heels — and everything else — and dive into a game of water volleyball.

  5. Nepal forms caretaker government pending new elections

KATMANDU, Nepal — Nepal announced the formation of a caretaker government Tuesday and settled into a tense calm after a weekend constitutional crisis led the prime minister to call elections, some four years and several shaky governments after the country set out to write its crucial, if elusive, national blueprint.

Mitt Romney’s victory in the Texas primary on Tuesday gives him enough delegates to capture the Republican presidential nomination, but he remains some distance from recovering from the damage caused by months of tussling with rivals in his own party.

  9. Analysis: Still no good news for Republicans in California

For years, even as despondency deepened in some of its quarters, the Republican Party in California has argued that its message really isn’t the problem. Depending on the year, blame has been laid on the messengers — nominees not telegenically or rhetorically smooth enough -- or on the ears of Californians who, party leaders argued, heard something different than what Republicans meant to say.

  11. Obama has big edge in California, poll shows

The potent mix of voters that has powered Democratic presidential victories in California for a generation overwhelmingly supports President Obama's bid for reelection, forming a demographic wall blocking Republican Mitt Romney from the biggest pot of electoral votes available in November.

  13. Elizabeth Warren's cheekbones

The contretemps over whether Elizabeth Warren is really an American Indian has gone from the ridiculous to the ridiculous. Warren is the blond, blue-eyed, ultra-liberal Harvard law professor running for Republican Sen. Scott Brown's seat in Massachusetts. Despite a complete lack of evidence outside of "family lore" and "high cheekbones," she listed herself as a "minority" professor in a law faculty directory for some years. Documentation showing Warren to be 1/32 Cherokee — that is, having a Cherokee great-great-great-grandfather — turned out not to exist.

  17. June 5 primary: The Times' endorsements

For voters in Los Angeles County, the most important decision in the election that culminates June 5 may be in the <a href=&quot;http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/endorsements/la-opinion-da-candidates-vignette-html%2C0%2C6790845.htmlstory">six-candidate race for district attorney</a>. This will be the <a href="http://opinion.latimes.com/opinionla/2012/01/los-angeles-county-district-attorney-election.html">first time since 1964</a> that the race is wide open, with no incumbent. The victor will find himself or herself at the center of issues that continue to make headlines: alleged political corruption, including investigations involving the county <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2012/may/17/local/la-me-0517-assessor-20120517;">assessor</a> elected officials' <a href="http://www.latimes.com/news/local/bell/;">use and misuse of tax revenue;</a> possible unlawful <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2012/may/16/opinion/la-ed-sheriff-baca-20120516">use of force</a> in the jails; troubling evidence of gang-like <a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2012/05/jail-deputies.html">cliques</a> among sheriff's deputies; <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2012/jan/31/opinion/la-ed-brownact-20120131;">unlawful private meetings;</a> the future of the <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2012/apr/02/opinion/la-ed-death-penalty-district-attorney-20120402">death penalty</a> and the <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2012/apr/03/opinion/la-ed-threestrikes-district-attorney-20120403;">three-strikes law;</a> and <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2012/apr/25/opinion/la-ed-realignment-district-attorney-20120425,">public safety realignment,</a> which will put many convicted felons under the supervision of county rather than state officials. If no candidate wins more than 50% of votes cast, there will be a Nov. 6 runoff between the top two finishers.

  21. Gays may have the fastest of all civil rights movements

SAN FRANCISCO &mdash; In 1958, the Gallup Poll asked Americans whether they approved or disapproved of marriage between blacks and whites. The response was overwhelming: 94% were opposed, a sentiment that held for decades. It took nearly 40 years until a majority of those surveyed said marriage between people of different skin colors was acceptable.
