Baseball notes: Yankees acquire Brandon McCarthy, cut Alfonso Soriano

The New York Yankees obtained help for their depleted rotation Sunday, acquiring veteran right-hander Brandon McCarthy from Arizona, and cut ties with veteran outfielder Alfonso Soriano. The Diamondbacks sent McCarthy, 3-10 with a 5.01 ERA this year, and cash to New York for left-hander Vidal Nuno. The move came after Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia had a setback with his right knee, possibly ending his season. New York was unable to work out a trade this week for the Cubs' Jeff Samardzija, who instead was dealt to Oakland.
