  1. All eyes on I'll Have Another at the Preakness

BALTIMORE -- Triple Crown horse racing season is a respite. It allows a deep breath for a sport that is desperately seeking reason.

  3. Bob Baffert has initial Kentucky Derby favorite in Bodemeister

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — All along, Bob Baffert has said that he fought the urge. He didn't allow even an idle moment to be filled with the blurry, soaring dreams that can be ignited by training a horse as promising as Bodemeister.

  5. Kentucky Derby is hard to handicap

The computer program came up with Hansen as the winner of Saturday's Kentucky Derby, and he certainly has a shot. However, Hansen's last prep race was very telling, and not in ways that suggest he can win. Many observers felt that his Breeders' Cup Juvenile victory last fall demonstrated some distance limitations, and those concerns seem to have been validated in the Blue Grass Stakes, where he gave up the lead in the stretch. Additionally, his owner suggested that he would not go to the lead in the Blue Grass, but he surged to the lead and carved out fairly solid fractions. If he can rate, he is talented enough to have a shot, but there is little to suggest he can or will rate.

  7. Union Rags' trainer, Michael Matz, has had quite a ride

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Michael Matz has had his share of life-altering moments. He was a three-time Olympian and carried the flag in the closing ceremony in Atlanta. He saved the lives of four young children after a plane crash in Iowa. And he was the trainer who watched over the life and death of Barbaro, perhaps the most beloved thoroughbred of this century.
