Boston Red Sox

Highlights
Boston Red Sox

Originally the Boston Americans, founded in 1901, the Red Sox won the first World Series in 1903. Playing its games from 1912 to the present at tiny and quirky Fenway Park, with its 37-foot high wall in left field called "The Green Monster" and other unique features, the Red Sox are woven deeply into the fabric of New England, the capital of a fandom referred to as "Red Sox Nation," because of its widespread reach. From 1978-2003, the Red Sox's decades-long inability to win the World Series -- often at the hands of the New York Yankees, often in improbable and heartbreaking ways -- became the primary identity of the franchise, summed up as "The Curse of the Bambino," a reference to the sale...  Show more »
Originally the Boston Americans, founded in 1901, the Red Sox won the first World Series in 1903. From 1978-2003, the Red Sox's decades-long inability to win the World Series -- often at the hands of the New York Yankees, often in improbable and heartbreaking ways -- became the primary identity of the franchise, summed up as "The Curse of the Bambino," a reference to the sale of Babe Ruth to the New York club. But the fortunes of the franchise changed in stunning fashion in 2004. Again facing the Yankees in the ALCS, the Red Sox lost the first three games, losing Game 3 at Fenway 19-8. But in the ninth inning of Game 4, Dave Roberts stole second base off closer Mariano Rivera, then scored the tying run. David Ortiz got the first of two straight walk-off hits in the 12th inning with a two-run homer. He repeated the feat later that same day in Game 5 with a single in the 14th inning. In Game 6, Curt Schilling pitched with a sutured right ankle, blood oozing through his sock, but earned the victory, forcing a Game 7 that the Red Sox won easily. It was the first time in baseball history a team won a series after trailing 0-3. The Red Sox then swept St. Louis in the World Series, its first title in 86 years. The Red Sox would win again in 2007, recovering from a 3-1 deficit to Cleveland in the ALCS, then sweeping Colorado for the title.  « Show less

  1. Kings fans can't forget stick incident in 1993, but there's more to the picture

Fans clamored to get Marty McSorley's autograph last week. And, no, he wasn't using a crooked pen.
Fans clamored to get Marty McSorley's autograph last week. And, no, he wasn't using a crooked pen. The line at Staples Center was so long, you would have expected overpriced beer to be available at the end of it. Clearly, with the Kings again in the...

  3. The Times' baseball rankings

Ricky Nolasco etched his name in the record book of the Miami Marlins last week passing Dontrelle Willis to become the Marlins' all-time leader in victories. He tops a list on which Josh Johnson ranks third, A.J. Burnett fourth and Brad Penny fifth. Nolasco doesn't quite evoke the emotion of, say, Bob Gibson or Warren Spahn. Then again, the Marlins have only been in business since 1993. Here's a look at the winningest pitcher in the history of each current major league franchise in order of victories:

  15. Miguel Cabrera isn't making the most of his situation

One problem with talk about the A's relocating is there is no obvious market for MLB to move into. Charlotte and Las Vegas are possibilities but the most viable is probably Portland. There's less talk about a third New York team with the Mets sorting through financial difficulties … Miguel Cabrera was expected to be a monster with Prince Fielder behind him but has inexplicably expanded his strike zone. He recently went 17 games in a row without a walk, the longest stretch of his career … The Twins' Joe Vavra could be the next coach shown the door. The Twins are hitting under .200 in May and looked awful in allowing Derek Lowe to throw a complete-game six-hitter. Tom Brunansky is the Triple-A hitting coach and has worked well with the organization's young hitters … The Red Sox are suddenly excited about their bullpen but Bobby Valentine used Alfredo Aceves for a four-out save Thursday, after he had used three pitchers to get three outs in one inning. Workload and pitching depth will be major storylines in July and August in Boston … While the Rangers haven't made a single move with their 25-man roster this season, the Orioles just made 23 in an eight-day period, counting some on the 40-man roster … Could 19-year-old Dylan Bundy get to the big leagues this year? The first-round pick last June has been overpowering since he put on a uniform, albeit against A-ball hitters. He's worked only 25 pro innings but has 36 strikeouts while allowing four hits and walking two … While Chase Utley was taking ground balls at Wrigley this week, the Phillies believe he could still be a month away from returning. They're glad replacement Freddy Galvis has picked up the slack in May after an unimpressive April … The Cardinals are very worried about reliever Kyle McClellan, placed on the DL this week with significant elbow problems. Their biggest concern, however, is Carlos Beltran's sore right knee, which had him out of the lineup last week. They need Beltran and shortstop Rafael Furcal to keep rolling.
