The Pittsburgh Pirates put center fielder Andrew McCutchen, the reigning National League most valuable player, on the 15-day disabled list because of a broken rib after waiting a week to see how it would heal. The move was back-dated to Aug. 4, the day after McCutchen left a game at Arizona because of pain in his side after a swing. The previous day he was hit in the same area by a pitch from Diamondbacks reliever Randal Delgado.
