5. Ravens news, notes and opinions

With the Ravens’ defense uncharacteristically struggling through the first four weeks, there has been plenty of finger pointing from fans and the media. Cornerbacks Cary Williams and Jimmy Smith have caught a lot of the blame and outside linebackers Paul Kruger and rookie Courtney Upshaw have received their share as well. But one guy that hasn’t gotten a lot of criticism – at least that I’ve heard – is Pernell McPhee. Big things were expected out of the second-year defensive end who was second on the Ravens last year with six sacks and led all Ravens’ rookies with 23 tackles in a part-time role. After the departure of Cory Redding, McPhee stepped into a starting spot but there has yet to be a spike in his production. Through four games, McPhee has a half sack and nine tackles. He was credited with two quarterback hits in last Thursday’s victory over the Cleveland Browns, so perhaps that’s a good sign. The Ravens badly need to get a pass rush from their front four, or specifically from somebody other than Haloti Ngata. Some of that falls on McPhee and the Ravens could also use a little more out of defensive end Arthur Jones and nose tackle Terrence Cody in their roles as well.

  7. Griffin leads Redskins to 30-17 victory over Colts, Luck

LANDOVER, Md. — Andrew Luck stepped up in the pocket to avoid the rush, then put a deep ball down the left side into the arms of fellow rookie T.Y. Hilton for a 31-yard touchdown, wrapping up an 80-yard drive. Robert Griffin III took a high-and-...

  9. Colts Camp 2012: Cory Redding answers the call

Cory Redding is not hard to find on a football field. The veteran defensive lineman is 6-4, 315 pounds and has made a career out of wreacking havoc in the trenches.

Not even Billy Cundiff was sure he would play Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. After injuring his left calf muscle Thursday and missing practices that day and the next, the Ravens kicker was understandably concerned that he might have to sit. But...

  15. Brown, McAdoo among surprising survivors as Ravens trim roster

For Chykie Brown, the idea of making it to the NFL rested on the periphery of reality during his playing days at the youth and high school level. That only changed when he became a starter at Texas and his defensive backs coach Duane Akina encouraged him to think bigger.

  23. Ravens expected to exercise patience when free agency opens Tuesday

The Ravens' goal was to re-sign Pro Bowl left guard Ben Grubbs before he officially hits the open market with hundreds of other NFL free agents Tuesday at 4 p.m. Now almost out of time and with seemingly no indication that Grubbs is willing to eschew free agency, they say their focus hasn't changed.
