  1. Some baseball, some haberdashery, some prognostications

FAU Sports | Sun Sentinel blogs
Talked with baseball coach John McCormack yesterday. Instead of planning for a regional, he was closing up shop. A lot of holes to fill, and he does expect ace Paul Davis to get drafted. That will mean replacing the......

  3. ESPN promotes South Dakota tourism or something

    Watchdog
ESPN's latest "Mt. Rushmore of Sports" release doesn't make much more sense to me than the last one. It appears Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Joe Namath and Manhasset's own Jim Brown will represent New York in this feature. I'm not......

    Watchdog
We lost to Pennsylvania again! New York finished fourth in the final voting for ESPN's "Mt. Rushmore of Sports" feature, which was won by Illinois (Michael Jordan, Walter Payton, Ernie Banks, Mike Ditka) with 28.6 percent of the vote. Pennsylvania......

  7. List of Best Dressed Coaches shrinks by one with Tressel gone

FAU Sports | Sun Sentinel blogs
As the allegations kept piling up, you had the sense that even though he was 9-1 vs. Michigan, that Jim Tressel???s time at Ohio State was running out. 5px 0px;" /> That leaves Howard Schnellenberger and Joe Paterno on......

  9. Football: Doba stayed true to coaching roots

Still vivid in Bill Doba’s 72-year-old mind is his first staff meeting as an assistant football coach for Lee Corso at Indiana University 36 years ago.
    South Bend Tribune
Still vivid in Bill Doba’s 72-year-old mind is his first staff meeting as an assistant football coach for Lee Corso at Indiana University 36 years ago. Doba was a hotshot up-and-comer who had just been elevated from the head coach at Mishawaka High...

  11. Noon kickoff with Gators shows how far Miami, ACC have fallen

Running off at the typewriter … What does it tell you about how far Miami has fallen as a national draw and how little clout the ACC has among its TV partners when Miami's game against Florida on Sept. 7 is kicking off at noon on ESPN? That's...

  13. Time For NCAA To Start From Scratch, Chart A New Course

This isn't about the good guys and the bad guys anymore. There always will be good guys and bad guys.
    The Hartford Courant
This isn't about the good guys and the bad guys anymore. There always will be good guys and bad guys. This is about common sense, the kind of sense that is sometimes hard to find among the most educated and entitled. The NCAA has lost the faith of the...

  15. Warts and all: Real stories of real people can be tough to tell

You should brace yourself for the Joe Paterno Story. Hollywood is quiet now, if not so much in deference to the convicted pedophile Jerry Sandusky's victims as to the fear of being perceived as premature and insensitive. But you can be sure they're all quietly thinking about it. The story of the great, powerful, bookish and surely hubristic Penn State football coach, seemingly brought down in his twilight years by a fatal decision to put the burnishing of his own mythology over the protection of innocents, is just too close to Greek tragedy to be resisted. One can even anticipate the final moments, as his statue is removed from the front of Beaver Stadium by jackhammers.

  19. Sandusky conviction doesn't end harm of scandal

For all the innocence he stole, there is not a prison term long enough or a hell hot enough for Jerry Sandusky, convicted of child sex abuse.
