3. Charlie Whitehurst Signs with Chargers

When the Seahawks swapped 2010 second-round picks with the Chargers, and threw in a 2011 third-rounder to acquire third-string quarterback Charlie Whitehurst in May 2010, San Diego general manager A.J. Smith was reportedly "thrilled."

  5. A few observations after 40 hours of free agency

We’re about 40 hours into the NFL free agent period and the Ravens have lost two starters on defense (Jarret Johnson and Cory Redding), learned that two of their other free agents are visiting other cities (Ben Grubbs and Haruki Nakamura) and have failed to make any roster additions.

  7. Free agent wide receiver market drying up on Ravens

At the NFL Scouting Combine late last month, Ravens coach John Harbaugh acknowledged something that was probably pretty obvious to anybody even remotely familiar with the team’s salary cap situation.

  9. Ravens remain quiet on first day of free agency

The first couple of hours of free agency came and went Tuesday with the Ravens — as expected — remaining quiet while confronting the reality they may be on the verge of losing arguably their top free agent. Pro Bowl left guard Ben Grubbs,...

  11. Ravens news, notes and opinions

This is probably pretty obvious, but it’s important enough to mention that the next 32 hours will be huge in the Ravens’ quest to retain Pro Bowl left guard Ben Grubbs. The Ravens have made what both sides have acknowledged was a substantial offer to Grubbs to convince him to eschew free agency and remain in Baltimore. All indications are that there isn’t much leeway to expand on the offer. Free agents aren’t allowed to negotiate with other teams until 4 p.m. tomorrow, but you can bet that Grubbs’ representative, Pat Dye, has already gotten a good idea about what teams are interested in his client and what they’re willing to pay. If Grubbs goes to free agency, that is a good indication that there will be another offer out there that surpasses the Ravens’ bid. And I wouldn’t be totally surprised if the Ravens then pull their offer and move on from Grubbs. That’s just my speculation based on them knowing they won’t win a bidding war with where they are with their salary cap situation.
