  3. From airboards to scoots, these snow toys fly

Snowboarders, take note: Your days in the limelight are over. Just as you once shoved two-plankers off the slopes with your insane rail spins and half-pipe jumps, a new generation of downhill rebels is ready to return the favor. You are yesterday's news. Cutting-edge snow demons now ride bullet-shaped inflatable sleds, snow-skimming bikes and double-deck snowskates that are so wickedly fast they are banned from most mountains (perhaps rightly so). But you'd understand. Snowboarding had that problem 20 years ago, right? So, put down your energy drink, shelve such terms as "biff" and "ollie" and prepare for the next snow craze.

  5. Skiing: the West's outstanding early-season conditions

Powerful late-fall storms have dropped many feet of snow on mountains throughout the West, creating some of the best early-season skiing and snowboarding conditions in years. Despite the still-sluggish economy, resorts have spent millions of dollars on capital improvements and continue to introduce innovative features and programs.

  9. Any easy downhill ride

    Here we go again.
Here we go again. The latest word from the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center is that the mid-Atlantic has a decent chance of another winter of above-average temperatures and below-average precipitation. With that in mind, we took a...

  11. Huacachina: Head over heels

    Special to The Times
"Do you like to fly?" José asked, the silver rims around his front teeth glinting in the desert sunlight. I was sitting in the back of a jerry-built dune buggy, and José was looking at me from the driver's seat, smoking a cigarette and grinning like a...

It's always 1971 on the deck at Canyon Lodge. Oh sure, you can order a 21st century Red Bull, but you're still going to be listening to the Allman Brothers playing "Statesboro Blues." The Mammoth Scenic Loop has nothing to do with being scenic. It's...

  17. Snowboard Michigan

It's not just for kids in baggy pants and nose rings anymore. Snowboarding is catching on with every age group. Increasingly, moms and dads are out on the slopes -- even running the half-pipes. Best of all, you don't have to go out West to get some great...

  19. Going U.P. in Michigan

The snow appeared on cue, just as Wisconsin faded into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. One minute there was a dusting, and the next a whole layer, white and inviting. It seemed too perfect, as if there must be snowguns hidden behind the "Welcome to...

Skiing -- certainly skiing in the Canadian Rockies -- offers up some of the world's best mornings. You are among the first to the mountain's top. It might be Lake Louise, Sunshine Village or Banff Mt. Norquay. Mountain peaks spread out in every...
