Scouts auction features columnist
Chris Erskine, whose two columns appear in the Los Angeles Times, is the master of ceremonies for the 37th annual Big Strike Auction presented by the Verdugo Hills Council of Boys Scouts of America.
The dinner begins at 6 p.m. Friday at the Castaway Restaurant, 1250 Harvard Road, Burbank. Tickets are $100 per person and can be reserved by calling Scout headquarters at (818) 243-6282.
Erskine writes the two columns, “Man of the House” and “Fan of the House” and is graphics editor.
Prizes up for bid during the evening include vacation days at the Biltmore Estate in Ashville, N.C., with airline tickets for two; New Year’s Day package of Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl Game tickets plus parking; and a one carat diamond valued at more than $5,000.
The auction fundraiser is the major source for supporting the Verdugo Hills Council’s operating budget, said Chapter Chairwoman Rahla Hall Lindsey. The council provides scouting education and leadership training programs for young men and boys living in Glendale, Burbank, La Crescenta, La Cañada Flintridge, Montrose, Sunland, Tujunga, Pasadena, Eagle Rock, North Hollywood and Los Angeles.
Special guests attending the auction dinner are Armen Ter Zakarian, the first Armenian Homenetmen Scout to receive Eagle ranking from the local council; and Matthew Diradoorian, the second Homenetmen Scout to receive the Eagle Scout rank. Conducting the opening flag ceremony will be Spencer Ross, a graduate ensign from the Coast Guard and recent Eagle Scout from Troop 210.
