Chesapeake Bay Bridge

Chesapeake Bay Bridge

The Bay Bridge carries travelers on Route 50 and Route 301 between the Chesapeake Bay's eastern and western shores. The idea of a bridge to traverse the Chesapeake Bay had long been discussed, but not until 1938 was state funding appropriated to the project. Ground finally broke in January 1949, and the original two-lane span of the 4.3-mile William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge opened to traffic in 1952. It replaced a ferry service that would carry cars across the bay. At the time, it was the world's longest continuous over-water steel structure. As the need for efficient road travel and traffic grew, the original span was repurposed to carry eastbound traffic, and construction on a second span carrying westbound traffic over the bay began in 1969 and was completed in 1973. The Maryland Transportation Authority, which maintains the bridge, is in the midst of a preservation and reconstruction project that includes resurfacing a portion of the westbound roadway. That work has forced the cancelation of the annual Bay Bridge Walk until 2009, when work is expected to be completed.  « Show less

  1. San Francisco celebrates Golden Gate Bridge, L.A. celebrates ... ?

If the Golden Gate Bridge's 75th birthday celebration proved anything to an architecture critic visiting from Los Angeles, it was that Southern California doesn't seem to have any single structure with the power to unify the region the way the bridge unifies the Bay Area.

  7. 75th birthday celebration for the Golden Gate Bridge

As its 75th birthday fast approaches, the Golden Gate Bridge is getting a little birthday present. Even though about 40 million vehicles cross it each year and visitors come in droves daily to admire and photograph it, the spectacular span has never had a visitor center. That is, until this month.

  11. Movie review: 'The Five-Year Engagement' a missed opportunity

The romantic comedy "The Five-Year Engagement," starring Emily Blunt and Jason Segel, tackles the messy business of love in a time when commitment can be career-ending for one of the better halves. Since it is mostly told from a fairly evolved guy's point of view, it sounds so promising, so fresh, you want to root for these kids to get it right — not just the couple, but the filmmakers.

  13. Keeping L.A.'s 30/10 plan on track

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's 30/10 plan may be in trouble. The proposal calls for borrowing from the federal government over 10 years the total amount expected to be raised and repaid over 30 years from a half-cent sales tax authorized by L.A. County voters in 2008. With the money, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority could complete transit and highway projects in 10 years instead of 30.
