  1. Pakistan secular candidates campaign at their own risk

SHABQADAR, Pakistan — When Masoom Shah hits the campaign trail these days, he brings a 9-millimeter Glock pistol and a team of up to 50 bodyguards. Instead of appearing before large crowds, he meets small clusters of voters at guesthouses where everyone is frisked before they enter. He limits his speeches to 30 minutes and then quickly slips out of the room.

  3. The boy behind Kristallnacht

On the night of Nov. 7, 1938, at the German Embassy in Paris, a 17-year-old Polish Jew named Herschel Grynszpan gained access to the office of a low-ranking Nazi named Ernst vom Rath by promising to turn over an "important document." Instead, Grynszpan fired five bullets at Rath; only two of them hit their target, but one proved fatal. Despite multiple transfusions of good French blood and the ministrations of Hitler's personal physician, Rath died two days later in a Paris clinic.

  5. As 'Mad Men' moves into 1968, Matt Weiner talks history

“Mad Men” returned to AMC Sunday night with a premiere that was criticized by some for being too slow – perhaps a touch ironic, given that the episode saw Don Draper and his colleagues ringing in 1968, a year that was anything but uneventful.

  9. Musharraf tells supporters he has returned to save Pakistan

KARACHI, Pakistan — As former military ruler Pervez Musharraf stepped off the plane at Karachi’s international airport Sunday, he returned to a very different nation from the one he was forced to leave in 2008 — one that has no interest in bringing back military rule, and has little if any appetite to give a onetime autocrat a major spotlight on the political stage.

  17. Terrorism and the war at home

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) waged a 13-hour filibuster on the Senate floor this week in a futile effort to set clear limits on the administration's use of covert military force. Specifically, Paul wanted the administration to concede that it couldn't legally assassinate Americans on U.S. soil. The idea that a president would approve a drone strike on a citizen sitting at a cafe in Boston or San Francisco or Wichita seems far-fetched, but even the least paranoid among us can't help but be troubled by the administration's less-than-definitive assurances.

  21. The $570,000 JFK bomber jacket bargain

Would you pay $570,000 for a bomber jacket?
Would you pay $570,000 for a bomber jacket? Probably not (though I’m willing to give NBA stars and the like an out here). But would you pay $570,000 for a bomber jacket, complete with presidential seal, once worn by John F. Kennedy aboard Air...
