7. Review: Farrah Karapetian toys with reality

In her first exhibition at Roberts & Tilton, Farrah Karapetian continues her examination of photography’s relationship to reality. Her large photograms — a process in which objects or people are placed directly in front of photographic paper that is then exposed to light — depict riot police, protesters and a smoke bomb. The figures are stark white silhouettes, yet although they have the appearance of immediacy — as if caught in a flash of light — they are actually records of carefully staged performances. Although a more direct process than conventional photography, the photograms subtly call into question the “reality” we often ascribe to photographic representation.

  15. Korean American community coalesces

The Los Angeles riots — six days of arson, looting and death — are known to Korean Americans as Sa-i-gu, "April 29" in Korean, the date the civil unrest started. Sa-i-gu erupted after the acquittal of one Latino and three white police officers charged with the beating of Rodney King, a black motorist. Blacks, whites, Latinos, Asian Americans, Korean Americans and others were directly and indirectly affected — and involved — in Sa-i-gu. But it was Korean immigrant merchants who were, memorably, too often caught in the middle.
