1. Our Picks: Summer Theater

Fairfield County has got a whole bunch of theatrical shows opening this week, all at once (in addition to Opera Comique at the Sherman Playhouse which we wrote about in the stage listings). You should probably go see them all at some point, but maybe this week you just want to pick one. There's Tartuffe at the Westport Country Playhouse, about a saintly dude who may or may not be a fraud. And there's Hair at the Brookfield Playhouse, the go-to hippie protest play if ever there was one. Brigadoon and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat are both musicals that are playing outdoors, at Musicals at Richter and Waveny Park, if you'd rather soak in the starlight and hear some tunes. So many options, so little time...

  7. Crime & Punishment: State Trooper by day, prostitute by night

Madeline Smith reportedly told the police officer who spotted her driving the wrong way down a Norwalk street that she could not possibly be drunk because she had tested her blood alcohol level on an iPhone app. But the app in question does not actually work as a breathalyzer test, police told the Norwalk Patch website; it is only meant to be used to trick drunk people into thinking it does. The user programs a high "blood alcohol level" into the app beforehand, tells a drunk person to breathe into the phone and then shows him or her the "results" to encouraging him or her not to drive. Smith, 25, had apparently not punched any number into the app before using it, so she thought it had shown her blood alcohol level as zero and hit the road. Police say their more traditional breathalyzer test showed Smith was well above the legal limit.

  9. Should the enormous Centennial Watershed State Forest be more accessible to residents?

Connecticut's 15,300-acre Centennial Watershed State Forest centered in Fairfield County is mammoth by the region's standards and continues to rank, more than 10 years after its $90 million purchase, as the state's most expansive and costly public land deal ever.

  11. Summer Theatre of New Canaan debuts on June 15 with 'My Fair Lady'

My Fair Lady is considered by many to be the perfect musical. Derived from George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, it tells the story of a professor who tries to transform a simple Cockney girl into a proper lady. When it opened on Broadway in 1956, it won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It's got songs like "Wouldn't It Be Lovely," "The Rain in Spain" and "On the Street Where You Live." See it outdoors in New Canaan's Waveny Park starting with a preview performance on Friday, the debut show of Summer Theatre of New Canaan's mainstage season.

  15. Crime & Punishment: Man robs cash register of Buffalo Wild Wings while interviewing for a job there

The Hearst Connecticut Media Group has thus far only dedicated one 152-word story, dropped into one of its small community newspapers, to a scoop about a scandal within a local institution. The teensiness of the story might have something to do with the fact that the institution is the Hearst Connecticut Media Group (which also publishes the daily Connecticut Post and Stamford Advocate). The community paper in question, the New Canaan News, is stating that Paresh Jha, who was until recently its sole reporter, admitted to fabricating quotes and sources for at least 25 stories over his 22-month tenure there. Jha had covered everything from crime to municipal government to teen marijuana use. According to his Linked In profile, he graduated from UConn in 2009 and received a first-place award from the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists this year for a series on underage drinking.

  17. Some of the best specialty beers are being made right here in Connecticut

Beer is the new wine. We've been hearing it in the bar business for at least three years running now. And why shouldn't it be? Beer is complex and varied. Beer's an excellent complement to food. And in an increasingly DIY, locavore culture, beer is something that can be made in a kitchen, with ingredients found locally – or better yet, in a local brewery or brewpub. But, much like wine, craft beer — as specialty brews made in small batches are known — can be overwhelming in its complexity. Here's some of the basic terminology — with insights from those in the know. And, as it happens, May 14 through May 20 is American Craft Beer Week, so there will be hundreds of events around the country, and several right here in Connecticut, including the Rising Pint Brewfest in East Hartford, showcasing beers from all over. It's a good time to test your tasting skills.
