1. New exhibits opening at The Aldrich in Ridgefield

The holiday season is finally wrapped up and area galleries and museums are starting to sprout back to life this week with new exhibits and renewed energy going into 2012. At the Aldrich there are not one, but six new shows opening Sunday afternoon. Brazilian artist Barrao has whipped up some ceramic clusters and mashups using fragments of popular vitreous porcelain and clay objects he found in second hand stores and flea markets for his exhibit Barrao: Mashups. Jim Dingilian: Subtractive Images features works in which he takes found objects and modifies them by subtraction — that is, erasing or removing something — to create an image. For example, he drew in charcoal all over one of those old wooden school desks and then used an eraser to draw on it. And he filled glass bottles with soot and scraped something into the soot. Stuff like that. Also opening will be Roy McMakin: Middle, Regina Sileira: In Absentia (Collection), Kathryn Spence: Dirty and Clean and Xu Bing: Tobacco Project. The Aldrich doesn't flip their shows too often, so whenever they do it's an event.

  3. Jack and the Beanstalk at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Jan. 28

We all know the story. Jack finds some magic beans that produce a beanstalk of unheard of proportions. He climbs it and meets up with a grumpy giant. But the production of Jack and the Beanstalk at the Ridgefield Playhouse this Saturday has a Neverending Story or Princess Bride-esque twist to it: Jack is a modern-day kid who uses his imagination to become Jack from the book he's reading. It's so meta your kids might think they are also Jack. Show up to see how his encounter with the giant turns out this time around.

  5. Aimee Mann performing at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Jan. 20

Aimee Mann writes songs that tell dry, witty tales of emotional self-destruction. Her catchy melodies and evocative lyrics often draw comparisons to the Beatles in style. Her early years with the band 'Til Tuesday earned her a Best New Artist award at the MTV Music Awards, back when MTV was still MTV. See her Friday night at the Ridgefield Playhouse along with folk pop openers Ivan & Alyosha from Seattle.

  7. The Sacred Science: Learn about alternative medicine on Jan. 14 at the Ridgefield Playhouse

Nick Polizzi and Dan Bailey are really into alternative medicine. So much so, that they traveled to the Amazon jungle for a month to find out how the shamans there use the resources in the environment around them to heal and treat and/or cure chronic and terminal illnesses that Western medicine is still clueless about. Of the eight people who needed medical care thatwent along for the ride, five returned with real improvement or full recovery, two were not cured, and one person did not come back at all. Find out all the details when the film The Sacred Science is screened at the Ridgefield Playhouse this Saturday night, followed by a Q&A with Polizzi and Bailey themselves.

  9. Learn to cook from chef Bernard Bouissou at Bernard's in Ridgefield on Jan. 17

Pancetta wrapped fillet mignon served over truffle potatoes sounds like a fancy entrée, the type of which you might not be inclined to make for yourself at home. But chef Bernard Bouissou is going to change all that. On Tuesday night he's welcoming patrons into his kitchen for a cooking class where he'll teach how to make an entire four-course romantic meal for two (Valentine's Day is coming up, you know). Other items on the menu include tuna tartare Napoleon with grape tomatoes, avocado and hearts of palm, rosace of smoked salmon with caviar and a warm chocolate souffle tart with Kalua whipped cream. The best part is, once he shows you how to make it, you get to eat it.

  11. Notorious: Motley Crue's Vince Neil plays the Ridgefield Playhouse on Jan. 19

Back in the early ’80s, New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon, Mötorhead and the pre-Pyromania Def Leppard battled over metal-mag cover space with softer, glossier stateside bands, who proudly wore pop sensibilities (and heaps of lucrative crossover potential) on deliberately ripped sleeves.

  15. Sample food from Chef Jehan deNoue at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Dec. 13

Holiday parties can become a bit stale and redundant after a while. And let's face it, the best part of the holiday season is the food. Chef Jehan deNoüe, resident chef of Albano Appliance & Service in Pound Ridge, New York is here to help freshen things up a bit. He'll be at the Ridgefield Playhouse Tuesday night to demonstrate how to build a proper cheese platter, chateaubriand and dessert with traditional French style so that even if your party sucks, at least everyone will be well fed. 17. Wine Tasting Dinner at Sarah's Wine Bar in Ridgefield

With the current cost of going out to eat in Fairfield County, $55 doesn't go as far as it used to. But Sarah's Wine Bar in Ridgefield (part of Bernard's) wants you to get your money's worth. This Sunday, they're hosting a casual five-course dinner with wine pairings, along with a Q & A with Sarah and a visit from Chef Bernard Bouissou himself. $55 probably wouldn't even cover the wine someplace else. The menu includes bay scallops, potato sage gnocchi, a cheese plate, boar ragu and much, much more.

  21. Discovering Portugal: The artwork of Tony Woolner and Gayle Glecker at Rockwell Art Galleries in Ridgefield

Artist Tony Woolner proposed to another artist, Gayle Gleckler, on a romantically charged road trip through Portugal. Gayle painted some acrylics inspired by the trip, and Tony whipped up some monoprints based on their favorite photographic images, including castles (pictured), walled-in towns, fields and harbors. Now they're hosting a joint exhibition at Rockwell Art Galleries in Ridgefield that opens with a reception Saturday evening to show off what they produced. It's appropriately entitled Discovering Portugal.

  23. Martin Sexton at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Dec. 10

Martin Sexton is probably best known for his versatile voice, which can suit any of the many genres his music touches upon, be it R&B, gospel, country or blues. One of his unique performance tricks is singing "guitar" solos, using effects to distort it, which can be confusing to newcomers to his shows. He'll be at the Ridgefield Playhouse Saturday night to show inland Fairfield County what he's got, with an intimate solo acoustic show.
