    Xiangzhong "Jerry" Yang, who was born in poverty to a family of pig farmers in rural China but escaped to become a leading researcher in cloning technology, cloning the first farm animal in the U.S. and demonstrating the viability of such animals, died Thursday at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston after a long battle with cancer of the saliva gland.
