  3. Geza Vermes dies at 88; scholar wrote about Dead Sea Scrolls

Geza Vermes was a graduate student in Belgium in the late 1940s when he was captivated by news sweeping the globe about a remarkable discovery in the desert east of Jerusalem. He quickly switched gears, penning his doctoral thesis on the Dead Sea Scrolls, the ancient manuscript fragments that would become a focus of his life's work.

  5. David Bowie video pulled from YouTube, then returned with warning

It's nice to know even a 66-year-old David Bowie can still elicit some pearl-clutching.
It's nice to know even a 66-year-old David Bowie can still elicit some pearl-clutching. The video for the art-rock titan's new single "The Next Day" stars Gary Oldman and Marion Cotillard as a priest and a prostitute. It features a bit of PG-13...

  7. Opera review: Ferruccio Furlanetto drives 'Murder in the Cathedral'

SAN DIEGO — Devout opera companies caring to connect with Holy Week easily can. Along with the obvious choice of Wagner's "Parsifal," contemporary composers such as Harrison Birtwistle ("The Last Supper") and John Adams ("The Gospel According to the Other Mary") have been contributing to the cause.

  9. Looking for opera inspiration

Like every other form of art, operas can be inspired by just about anything — historical events, myths, epic poems, plays, even movies. Often, such operas go on to eclipse their inspiration. Puccini's "Tosca," derived from a play by Victorien Sardou, is a good example; so is Verdi's "Rigoletto," based on a tragedy by Victor Hugo. But not all make that leap. Some remain in the shadow of their progenitors.

  11. The pope dresses down -- and what it means

Five years ago I wrote an op-ed column for The Times about Pope Benedict XVI’s partiality for ornate vestments and miters (the double-pointed hats sported not only by the pope but also by other bishops in the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches). That article, which a clever copy editor titled “Dress Code,”  is looking more and more like a period piece after the inaugural Mass of Benedict’s successor, Pope Francis.

  13. TV review: A thrilling look at 'Shakespeare Uncovered'

Loving Shakespeare with a love so immoderate it would take a Shakespeare to describe it, I was pretty well pre-sold on "Shakespeare Uncovered," a six-part analytical-historical gambol through several of his plays, beginning Friday on PBS. By the same token, I am liable to be more critical of the product; but as it turns out, it's a treat.

  23. London Olympics: 10 day trips outside London

Ticket holders at this summer's Olympic Games will have something in common with non-sporting London visitors: At some point, they will want to flee the jam-packed capital. Luckily, escaping the madding crowds is as easy as hopping on a train. As a Brit who grew up near the city, here are my recommendations for 10 gold-medal-winning day trips.
