1. Gordon Davidson is still giving to theater

Founder of the Mark Taper Forum, éminence grise of the regional theater movement, crusading champion of Los Angeles theater, Gordon Davidson was put in an unusual position last fall at USC's School of Dramatic Arts: He had to explain who he was to a group of undergraduates who had signed up for a semester-long course with him.

10. Handling mail for J.D. Salinger is an eye-opener

Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
Every culture has its central rite of passage--a pilgrimage, a quest, a time of testing. For Americans and their cultural fellow travelers, the defining experience is adolescent alienation. What better preparation, after all, for life in a society...

12. Home Depot has rights, too

This is in response to the letter writer from Catonsville who wrote that he was "appalled" by Home Depot's decision to no longer allow a hot dog stand in front of its stores ("Home Depot hammers the little guy, again," May 20). The main thing that the writer fails to remember is that Home Depot owns the property and has the right to act like any other landlord and exercise their right to renew or cancel a lease as they see fit.

16. Home Depot hammers the little guy, again

In regard to your article about the hot dog stands at Home Depot ("Home Depot tells owners of hot dog stands to relocate," May 17), I am appalled that the Big Box Bully would crush a small business owner in this environment. To throw out a long-time vendor that brings a nice added touch to this behemoth is unfathomable to me and should anger all small business owners especially the small businesses that use Home Depot for their own livelihood.

An article in the May 17, 1913, edition of The Argus commended a young girl for keeping her wits in an emergency situation. The presence of mind of 8-year-old Isabelle Smith, of Cedar Hill, near St. Denis, probably saved her life about 6 o'clock Saturday...
