  12. Review: 'Two Lovers'

Set during a gray Brighton Beach winter, "Two Lovers" begins with the solid shape of Joaquin Phoenix lumbering down a pier, a bag of dry cleaning slung over his shoulder. We don't know who he is or anything about him, really, but for the heavy resignation and hopelessness that saturate his every step. There is no hesitation as he makes his way up and over the railing, jumping into the frigid bay below. But submerged deep in the icy waters, he discovers that he is not yet ready to die.

Stewart says of the semi-autobiographical track &ldquo;Brighton Beach,&rdquo; &ldquo;I&rsquo;m most at home telling a story, whether fictitious or not.&rdquo; Attempting to explain the writing of the breakup tune &ldquo; It&rsquo;s Over,&rdquo; he says, &ldquo;I think it&rsquo;s admirable to be personal on a record, but I didn&rsquo;t sit down to write a song about divorce.&rdquo; Stewart took six songs off Time (and four fan favorites) for a test drive during an intimate club show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles</span>
