  1. Cunard's old-school travel continues tradition on Queen Elizabeth

I'm standing in front of the mirror in our stateroom, looking over my wife's shoulder and tying my black bow tie. It is our first sea day and the first of three formal nights on our leisurely eight-night early January crossing on Cunard Line's spanking-new Queen Elizabeth, on the way to New York from Southampton, England. The cummerbund is belted on, the studs are securely in place on shirtfront, but I've saved the neck knot for last, reminding myself of how my father first taught me how to do this on another transatlantic trip a half a century ago.

  3. The Actor's Craft: The Eli Wallach method

The moment one enters the gracious Upper West Side apartment of Eli Wallach, the home he has shared for decades with his wife and fellow actress, Anne Jackson, there is an unmistakable sense of life being well lived. Smiling and curious about his guest, he sits down for the scheduled chat about himself, but he'd much rather offer a tour of the place, pointing out the photos of his daughters, the artworks of his son, the stage and screen memorabilia extending back more than half a century, and — oh, what's this? — a framed marriage certificate from 1948.

  11. Ayelet Waldman, 'Bad Mother'

At the moment, Ayelet Waldman's biggest fear is mountain lions. Specifically, having her throat ripped out by one. She's also afraid of sharks and, dare she say it, her husband, Michael Chabon, dying of cancer. While we sit talking in the writing studio...

  13. N.Y., now in season

RHINEBECK, N.Y. — There are few places in this country where you can sip beer in a Colonial inn while chatting about the new Frank Gehry building up the road. The Hudson Valley is just such a spot, a region that bridges centuries as well as it straddles cultures.

  17. Brooklyn dodgers

NEW YORK — Sorry, but I've heard that Brooklyn is over. You can get your hipster mustache waxed; just don't do it in Brooklyn. You wouldn't go to Seattle now, would you? If you wanted to visit the American community of the moment, you would visit, say, Portland, Ore. Haven't you heard: Brooklyn's compromised, edge-free; it's Portland five minutes ago.

  21. 'Red Hook Summer': Spike Lee summers in Brooklyn, again ★★ 1/2

Spike Lee's movies generally attempt too much, try too many things, canvass a larger array of characters and situations than even a loosely structured story line can easily accommodate. And that's one of the gratifying traits in his work.
