7. The food battle for New York's Little Italy

A family from the Midwest formed a crescent around the posted menu outside an Italian restaurant on Mulberry Street, the main (and only) drag of Manhattan's shrinking Little Italy. It didn't take long for the Latino restaurant barker — the guys who stand on the sidewalk trying to lure in the indecisive and hungry — to pounce: "Ciao, bellas," he said, using the Spanish plural of the Italian noun. "Come in and eat," he added, motioning with a sweep of his arm toward the open door. The family, though, thought better of it and moved on.

  9. City walk

Usually the trajectory that neighborhoods go through as they gentrify is entirely predictable -- and more than a little depressing. First a scruffy, down-at-the-heels area welcomes a few urban pioneers drawn by an attractive and affordable housing stock. Then come the first businesses catering to those early arrivals: sneaker shops, a hole-in-the-wall coffee place or spiffed-up dive bar. Then come the piggy-back establishments and a second wave of residents, perhaps somewhat less hardy than the first. Then comes the frozen yogurt place. Then comes Starbucks and Banana Republic and the fat lady, singing.

  21. Up on the roof, where the drinks — and the Manhattan views — are fine

Heaven may be a little closer in New York these days, especially in Manhattan, where hotels' rooftop bars are among the best places to enjoy summer. A few are restricted to guests, such as those at the Surrey, the Trump SoHo and the Thompson LES, but there are plenty of newer roof decks that are open for those who want their own little piece of the sky.
