   ATLANTA (AP) -- Chipper Jones knows the standings and the
calendar are working against the Atlanta Braves and their fading
playoff hopes.
   "It's getting that time, you know?" Jones said after Sunday's
7-4 loss to the Washington Nationals.
   "You hate to say you've got to win out, but you find yourself
at certain points in games like today wondering how you lost. You
think back over the course of the season ... I've said that a lot
this season."
   The Braves completed a 4-5 homestand with Sunday's loss. The
homestand began with three straight losses to the New York Mets.
Now comes a three-game series at New York.
   The Braves trail the New York Mets by 81/2 games in the division,
their largest deficit of the season, with 19 games left. They began
the day 41/2 games behind San Diego in the wild card.
   "Certainly coming in here and sweeping us pretty much put us
where we're at," said pitcher John Smoltz of the Mets' three wins
