yesterday by lethal injection for the 1988 shooting death and
robbery of a 63-year-old man.
Williams maintained his innocence until the end. He used his
last words to say his co-defendants pinned the crime on him at the
urging of the prosecutor. He also turned to the victim's sister in
the witness room and said he didn't do it.
Governor Bob Riley said earlier yesterday he would not stop the
lethal injection execution of Luther Jerome Williams.
The U.S Supreme Court, in a 5-4 vote, yesterday denied an
application for a stay of execution.
The 47-year-old Williams of Birmingham was convicted in 1989 of
shooting 63-year-old John Robert Kirk of Gordo. Kirk was assaulted
when he stopped his pickup truck alongside Interstate 20/59 to
check the engine. He was led into the woods and shot in the head
