BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WBRC-TV MyFoxAL.com)—Latest Alabama news, sports, business and entertainment:
Study ranks Alabama 3rd fattest state for adults, 11th for kids
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama is still struggling to get off
the couch and break away from its Southern neighbors as one of the
heaviest states in the country.
The state was ranked third -- with 29.4 percent of its residents
regarded as obese -- in the Trust for America's Health study
released yesterday. It was fifth worst for physical inactivity,
with 29.5 percent of the population saying they'd rather sit around
than jump around.
Most of the top 15 states are in the South.
At first it appears that Alabama improved because the state
slipped from first to third in the rankings, but officials say the
state is only gaining slower than others.
Alabama fared better in the rate of overweight children aged 10
to 17. In that category, it ranked 11th with 16.7 percent of young
people considered obese.
