There is a movie complex being built at the Esplanade Mall in Kenner that could bring a much needed boost in business. Vanessa Bolano has more.
This morning city leaders officially broke ground on a new movie complex at The Esplanade. Located between Macy's and Dillard’s The Grand 14 Esplanade is a project that's been in the works since 2006.
“The only thing you have to leave Kenner for is to go to a stadium theater. Everything else you ought to be able to do within our city limits and now in a couple months you'll be able to do that and I think it's going to be a great economic engine for this city,” says Kenner Mayor Mike Yenni.
An engine that will hopefully roar for Kenner and the Esplanade Mall.
“In a good economy it takes them about two years to turn a mall around. In the economy we're in now we're very fortunate to have a Target store that just opened up here," says Yenni.
Owned by the Simon Property Group for over four years now, their goal has been to step up foot traffic and reel in retailers.
Both Hurricane Katrina and the economy have challenged Esplanade Mall, but over the past year about a dozen retailers have opened inside and with the new movie theatre they only expect bigger and better opportunities.
If all goes as planned, the theater will open sometime next summer and Esplanade Mall will be on its way to becoming a one stop shop for shopping and a night out.
