A cupcake shop in Kenner is out to prove big flavor comes in small packages. Each morning Claudia Melgar and her team at the Kupcake Factory, bake hundreds of sugary, sweet treats. She even puts yours truly to work, icing the cupcakes. Unfortunately, mine don't turn out quite as well as Melgar's.
We're working out of her Kenner shop, one of three locations. She's looking to open a fourth and says the industry isn't slowing down anytime soon. "I was the first in the metro area with a cupcake shop and now there's a few more so it's definitely still growing, but it's been around since I don't know, at least the past 15 years."
The growth is thanks in part to TV shows like 'Cupcake Wars,' which push bakers to the extreme. Melgar's craziest cake? Bacon, peanut butter and chocolate! "Some people were a little scared of the bacon on top. It was nice crispy bacon on top. It was delicious. It was chocolate ganache, so that was probably the craziest so far."
Each season the cupcake factory comes out with all sorts of fun new flavors, but they say their best sellers are always their originals like their 'Chocolate Chocolate' and 'Wedding Cake.' My taste test determines they're both delicious. But, if you are in the mood for something different, Melgar says she lets Mother Nature dictate her flavors so get ready for fall! "Our pumpkin is coming out soon. We're also doing the pineapple upside-down, or inside-out as we're calling it and sweet potato with pecans."
If that's the line-up for autumn, I can't wait to see what they have this winter…
