Hundreds of homes in Jefferson Parish are still without electric service in the wake of Hurricane Gustav. The American Red Cross is using information from Entergy Louisiana to identify where to deliver self-heating meals, to provide food for residents there.
Meanwhile, Red Cross disaster workers are opening a shelter at the Devon Keller Memorial Center in Gibson, La., to accommodate residents of flooded bayou islands who are being rescued by the Louisiana Air National Guard. "We don't know how many people to expect until they arrive, but we have trained volunteers there, getting ready for them," said June Ejk, a volunteer from Scranton, Pa., who came to lead Red Cross disaster sheltering operations in southeastern Louisiana.
The distinctive red and white box trucks that signal Red Cross humanitarian relief will be in impacted areas of Harvey, Gretna and Marrero this afternoon with shelf-stable meals, bottled water and snacks.
Harvey - At Lapalco Boulevard and Destrehan Avenue, and through the Woodmere neighborhood
Gretna - At the park on Manhattan Boulevard
Marrero - Circulating through the Barataria/Crestwood neighborhood
The Red Cross is also resuming food distribution at the Sanchez Center at Caffin and Claiborne avenues in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans. Additional feeding locations and routes will be activated as pockets of need are identified.
