CHICAGO—A Chicago alderman thinks you should pay more for police protection.
Alderman George Cardenas is proposing that all homeowners, renters and businesses pay a new "safety and security fee" -- as much as $5 a month, tacked on to ComEd bills.
He says the new fee could raise $70 million a year and the money could be used to hire an extra 700 police officers.
Cardenas says the police department is badly understaffed, and the manpower shortage is showing itself in the spike in shootings in the city.
The head of the police union says the city shouldn't have to impose new fees to pay for basic city services like public safety.
