EAST NEW YORK, BROOKLYN (WPIX)—Police are stepping up patrols in a Brooklyn neighborhood where a stray bullet struck a 81-year-old woman in the cheek Wednesday evening while she was in her living room, watching television.
Police say a fight broke out in the East New York courtyard outside of Agripina Camacho's first floor apartment on Barbey street in the Belmont-Sutton Houses.
Camacho is expected to pull through. She's listed in stabe condition at Brookdale Hospital.
Making matters worse. police are also investigating another shooting, in the same neighborhood. That's where an elderly man was also struck by a stray bullet.
Community activist Tony Herbert says frustrated residents want the NYPD to do a better job of dealing with illegal guns.
"The problem of the matter is that we've got to get these guns off the street," said Herbert. "And somebody's got to have the common sense to go and push some kid of legislation to get real tough on these guns. Two, three years is not going to help us."
