OZONE PARK, N.Y. (WPIX) -- A former English teacher at a South Ozone Park Middle School pleaded guilty Tuesday to sending sexual videos and messages to three of his 12-year-old female students.
Police say Umesh Ramjattan, 24, admitted to authorities to sending indecent messages and pictures to several of his students.
"A classroom should always be a safe place for a child, and a teacher should never abuse his or her position of trust and influence," said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.
According to Brown, one of Ramjattan's female students sent him an email to the address he gave out to students to inquire about school work. Soon after, he began sending sexually suggestive instant messages and later sent her a video of him and his girlfriend having sex.
The same incident happened with two other students, both of them female, Brown said. He apparently sent a shirtless picture of himself in addition to the sexually explicit messages to one of the students. The other only received the racy messages, according to Brown.
Ramjattan was busted after one of the students told her parents, who then called police.
The conditions of his plea deal are not etched in stone, but Ramjattan is expected to be sentenced on April 20 to five years probation as long as he completes a sex offenders program. He will also have to give up his New York teaching license and his computer, as well as register as a sex offender.
