SHIRLEY, N.Y. -- Two police officers and a woman were injured in a car crash on Long Island.
The cruiser collided with a box truck in Shirley at the intersection of William Floyd Parkway and Flintlock Drive Saturday afternoon. Police say they were responding to an emergency call at the time and had their lights and sirens on. The crash sent the truck spinning out of control until it hit a car stopped at a red light. Flames then broke out in the police car with one of the officers still inside. A good samaritan helped out with a fire extinguisher while the officer escaped.
Officer Richard Steck was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. Officer Thomas Daley and the woman in the car were taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center where they were treated and released for minor injuries.
The driver and a passenger in the box truck were not injured. That driver, however, identified as 27 year old Glaydson Oliveira of Manhattan, was issued a summons for driving without a license.
